A decade ago, gaming was largely defined by consoles, desktop PCs, and dedicated handheld devices. In 2026, the boundaries are much less rigid. Games are being designed for multiple platforms, AI is entering development workflows, handheld PCs are gaining attention, and player communities increasingly influence what becomes popular.
At the same time, the business behind gaming is changing. Developers are dealing with high production costs, tougher competition for players’ attention, and growing pressure to build games that can remain commercially sustainable after launch.
The result is an industry moving in several directions at once. Some changes are technical, while others involve how games are funded, developed, distributed, discovered, and monetised.

Artificial Intelligence Is Moving Into Game Development

Artificial Intelligence is one of the most discussed technologies in gaming, but the conversation in 2026 is becoming more practical.
Developers are using generative AI and other tools for tasks such as brainstorming, research, code assistance, prototyping, and some content-production workflows. Instead of running a demanding game entirely on local hardware, cloud gaming streams the experience from remote servers to a compatible device.

There are still limitations. Internet quality, latency, server capacity, regional availability, and operating costs all affect the experience.
Cloud gaming therefore has potential, but its long-term economics and user experience will continue to evolve.

Handheld Gaming Is Having a Strong Moment

Portable gaming is no longer limited to traditional handheld consoles.
PC gaming handhelds have created a middle ground between a desktop gaming machine and a dedicated console. Devices such as Steam Deck-style handhelds allow players to access large PC game libraries while travelling or relaxing away from a desk.

Instead, several trends are developing together.
